Tips to Pick a Great Dog Walker in Chicago

In Chicago it’s hard to make sure that your dog is well taken care of all the time, especially because many dog owners don’t have a yard to leave their dog in while they’re at work. That’s where Chicago dog walker services come in. For your dog to not only be happy but also healthy, they need to get outside and stretch their legs even if it’s midday in Chicago. Dog walker fees don’t always mean great experience and professionalism, so to help you pick a quality dog walker here are some good additional questions to ask your potential canine cohort. Are you trained in canine learning theory, pack management and body language? It takes more than a love of dogs to make for great dog walker services. Chicago dog walkers should use scientifically sound and humane training methods as well as be able to spot potential conflicts before it happens. So be sure to ask them a few questions about how they would handle situations and what training they have. You’ll also want to find out what equipment they use. Many animal associations recommend hiring walkers that use positive-reinforcement. Make sure they aren’t going to be using rough tactics like choke, shock or prong collars, water spray, and definitely not hitting as corrective measures. Who will be walking my dog and do they walk alone or in a group? Make sure you know the qualifications of who will actually be doing the dog walker services. Chicago dog walking companies can have multiple employees so find out who they are. You can also request to meet them to better judge their character and if they’ll work well with your dog. Also, Inquire about whether their dogwalkers work in a group or alone. Groups often make the dog pack too large to effectively manage and additional people can reduce focus on the dogs. Make sure their whole focus is on the job, not on friends or cellphones! Are they licensed, insured and bonded? If they’re going to call themselves a “professional” and charge Chicago dog walker fees, they had better be able to verify their dog-walking insurance and business license. Each employee needs to be bonded, so make sure they’re telling the truth. Are you certified in canine first aid? You never know when glass shards may spring up on the path or a minor scuffle between pooches can result in some scratches or injuries. Find out what medical care your dog walker can provide, as well as what their protocol is during an emergency. How prepared are they? What will they do if a dog is lost or they need to get your dog to a veterinary clinic?   You want to make sure that your fuzzy friend is well taken care of on walks so do a bit of extra research when picking from the many Chicago dog walker services. With the increase in dog walking agencies you can’t be too careful when picking a good dog walker, so find one that can confidently answer your questions and has the training and insurance to back it up. It’s the best way to rest assured that your dog is in good hands.  Article Resource Box:When you need a reliable and well established dog walker service, Chicago has one of the greatest! Tips for a Better Dog Walk

Dogs are pack animals, an idea that is quickly forgotten with all the baby talk and ‘cutesy wootsy woo woo’ to Princess Queen of Fluffy. If anyone has seen Cesar Millan then you already have a strong idea of what this mentality is and how it affects the behavior of your dog. One of the key parts of having successful control of your dog is by controlling the walk. And as Chicago dog walkers, control is a huge issue. So to help you take control of your walks, here are some tips to take you from follower to leader, the role a dog owner is meant to be.   Use Short Leashes This is huge as a city dog walker. Chicago sidewalks aren’t very big to begin with and letting your dog roam 20 feet ahead of you is entirely counterproductive. A shorter leash lets you have a greater control of your dog, and attaching the leash at the top of the neck is best to get messages through to your dog.   Start Calm Once your show your dog a leash does it usually bolt for the door tail wagging, barking, whining or any of the previous? This is a bad time to leash your dog. A proper submissive mindset is a big deal! It’s like if you start your day on speed and caffeine: bad things are sure to follow. And for dog walkers, Chicago is a bad place to have an out of control dog! After presenting the leash wait for your dog to calm down and relax before putting the leash on. Not that ‘I’m sitting now can you put the lease on so I can drag you to the door?’ waiting either. I mean full relaxed posture sitting or best yet, laying down beside you.   Control the Door It’s amazing how a walk can fall apart before it even gets out the door! If your dog is charging down the steps and tugging you after the leash out the door you’ve already started wrong. You should always be the first one out the door. Make your dog wait patiently beside the door before you invite them outside. You are giving them the privilege to leave the house, your dog should have your permission!   Remember Who Is In Control Consider when you have followed behind someone while talking or being lead somewhere. Have you ever noticed that you stop and move automatically by the actions of the person you’re following? That is the ‘submissive’ attitude. When you are being lead you follow, it’s just common sense. It’s the same with your dog. So start leading! Make sure that you walk ahead of your dog. They will often instinctively follow their dog walker. Chicago doesn’t treat misbehaving dogs kindly no matter how cute they are, and proper leading will make your dog see you as pack leader and someone they should listen to. Your dog walking behind or beside you is ideal, but be sure to correct them if they start trying to dart ahead.   Calm assertiveness is crucial to becoming a leader figure to your dog, something that is necessary to have a calm and happy canine. Remember that consistency is a major point or proper dog training, so you must commit to these steps every time you walk your dog. And don’t be afraid to enlist some outside help if you have an out of control dog on your hands. A proper dog trainer is a small price to pay when an overly excited or aggressive dog could be put down and you could be sued in a dog bite case.     Article Resource Box:If you need to hire quality a quality walker to help take care of your dog, Cruisin Canines is the pick of the litter! Separation Anxiety

Separation Anxiety

Dogs are pack animals and naturally social creatures so they bond with us and want to be with us and that’s why we love them!  Separation anxiety is an attachment disorder that can cause a panic response when someone leaves.  If a dog experiences separation anxiety it isn’t fun for anyone involved.  Some people believe that separation anxiety is more common in dogs with single owner households and we can tell you from experience that isn’t always true.  Check out the articles below to find out more about separation anxiety: Early signs of separation anxiety and how to prevent it: http://bit.ly/zAxUQi When it is not separation anxiety and when it is just a dog wanting to have fun while you are away :):  http://bit.ly/y1sZuZ Understanding separation anxiety and how to overcome it:  http://bit.ly/y8zjz8 What dog breeds may be predisposed to separation anxiety:   http://bit.ly/yQ2ydU If you have any questions about your dog and separation anxiety, please feel free to contact us!
